30 Best Fall Vacations in the USA

(This article may or may not contain affiliate links. What does that mean?)

Fall in Los Angeles these days is a pile of dying lawns as persistent drought chokes off our water supply. It’s not something we want because our children only have a memory of autumn. We want to share the beauty of every part of every season as often as possible. My favorite fall memory is driving on the Alcan Highway when I returned from Fairbanks to Los Angeles. I couldn’t resist stopping from time to time to take panoramic photos of the stunning beauty. Truly, I was speechless watching the colors that ranged from poppies to fire to mint. Raised in Los Angeles, I had never experienced the depth and intensity of the fall.

I asked my favorite travel bloggers which parts of the United States are their favorites for family vacations. Here are the top 30 seats.

Utah Mountains

New England can have all the love for fall colors, but Utah’s mountains have something they don’t: seas of aspen trees that turn a vibrant yellow color in the fall. Not to mention the backdrop of majestic mountains. There are plenty of places within an hour’s drive of the Salt Lake City airport to witness it, but there are two worth including on your Utah bucket list.

Option 1: Drive Guardsman Pass to Park City. You will start in Salt Lake City and conduct Cottonwood Grand Canyon. Willow Lake Trail and Silver Lake Loop are both easy to moderate trails that are great for experiencing the fall colors. From there, take the famous Guardsman Pass, which takes you up approximately 10,000 feet and descends into Park City. Fall is the off season for all ski resorts, so Park City is a great place to spend a fall getaway. Luxury hotels like the Stein Eriksen Lodge or the Montage Deer Valley are much cheaper than usual.

Option 2: Ride the Alpine Loop in the Utah Valley. Start by going up American Fork Canyon and heading towards Sundance Resort. There are several places to hang out and walk through the groves and take pictures. Once you arrive at Sundance, be sure to take the ski lifts to soak up the views of majestic Mount Timpanogos and enjoy a meal at the mountaintop lodge.

Whichever one you Choose, it’s sure to be an experience you won’t forget.

Acadia National Park in Maine

Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island on the scenic coast of Maine, and it’s a great place for families to see the New England fall colors!

There are plenty of hiking trails in Acadia for all types and ages, and October is arguably the best month to visit. Some of the cliff hikes in Acadia can be difficult and dangerous to navigate, but most of the trails are easy and family-friendly. For a short, flat hike, you can hike around the Jordan Pond, which also has beautiful fall colors.

Jordan Pond is one of the best hikes in Acadia National Park for kids, and in addition to the great fall colors, there’s also a restaurant called Jordan Pond House, which is famous for its popovers (rollers).

Another great family hike for kids is the Ocean Path, which is a flat, easy walk along Acadia National Park’s most scenic coastline, with several nice lookout points to stop and take pictures. along the way.

If you want to stay near the park, Auberge Asticou is a classic inn where you can experience a bit of history during your visit to Acadia. This is a historic hotel and restaurant dating back to 1883. It has been restored and equipped with a heated swimming pool, tennis court and other modern facilities.

For sightseeing, you can take a historic walking tour in nearby Bar Harbor or a food tour. These are two great options!
