Finding Fort – A typographic search for Trace by Mara Reisberger and Tom Koch features Fort, this vibrant and friendly typeface that everyone knows has been used, misused and overused for more than six decades, ever since It was published by The Monotype Corporation. 1962. Celebrities in the typographic world such as Stanley Morrison and Vincent Connare have been in the limelight for the flamboyant lifeline of this typeface. But the typeface’s designer, Karl Reisberger, remained little known. So far.
The book travels around the world in search of “findings” such as Reisberger’s early posters, original designs and advertising material to trace the origin story of the “typeface everyone knows”. Sixty years after Fort’s first appearance, it has found new life as Toshi Omagari’s revised typeface, Fort Forward. Its release accompanies this book.
In addition this book on the Fort contains the artistic visions of thirty-one contemporary artists who have examined the formal language of the Fort in dialogue with its historical framework. Interpretations of these international creatives open up new perspectives for typography.
